WHO IS MY
COUNTRY?
In the
beginning, the elohim created skies and earth.
Welcome back.
Let's think about our nation.
As we
prepare to celebrate our nation's birth, I have been listening to the rhetoric
of a lot of people who claim to love their country. We know these folks. They
make the most noise in our society. They utter the most ridiculous statements. Often,
they utter statements that are like so many weird ideas that pop into our heads
from time to time, but upon reflection we do not say them because they sound
stupid. They come from our emotions, not our reason.
These
Americans who claim to love their country—I listen to other things they say and
it occurs to me that they love the land, not the people.
Well, that’s
not entirely true. They do love the people who look like them, think like them,
and worship like them. In other words, they love their tribe.
They fancy
themselves the tribe of “real Americans.” If they carved a totem pole, there
would be an American flag, a Bible, a rack of fully loaded guns, and at the top
would be the visage of a “real American.” Ronald Reagan perhaps? Some other white man most certainly…
A lot of
other Americans, the majority I hope, love Americans. I number myself among
them.
Those of us
who are Christians are commanded to love everyone so we must love all Americans.
A part of loving them is standing up for them against those noisy voices that
would take away their liberty and their dignity.
We must
never forget to love the ones we oppose too.
Blessings...
